Alcohol Licensing project - christchurch

ST John of God Waipuna - Otautahi

Objective:  To guard against over-supply of alcohol to high deprivation areas, by informing more communities about the impact of increased supply on young people, equipping them to make submissions and by monitoring licence notifications.

What was done: The CAYAD team worked to build a group of stakeholders from a range of sectors (including local NGOs, Police and public health staff) with good connections with community.

A 'CAAT' (community alcohol action team) was formed, which is a partnership Community public health and Community Law and the local CAYAD team to inform communities and provide submission resources.

Results to date:  The CAAT has mapped  high deprivation areas in Christchurch to focus on the most vulnerable communities.  They now receive all notifications for new licences as a team, meet regularly and take action to inform communities.
